BCC Color Match Question
on Aug 23, 2011 at 6:46:20 am

Hi!
Using Vegas Pro 10 w/ Boris Red 5. How do I compare two video events (clips) and match the colors? I've read the help but it only provides definitions of the settings.

It says. "Ideally, you want to view both the Source and Target clips so that you can sample colors."

OK... so how do you view both source and target clips in Boris UI???

Is there a tutorial how to use the color matching?

Thanks for any assistance!
Byron

Hi,

This is how I do (maybe there is a better way...)
1- save a snapshot in vegas of the source clip.
2- Apply boris red to the target clip and launch the UI.
3- Insert the snapshot on red timeline (add still image).
4- Resize the snapshot.

Hope that helps.

use the crop tool first so you can see both clip's colors, etc., make your adjustments, then un-crop before render.

Great! Thanks for the tips. The .jpg image works well enough to compare the video colors.

The thing is, the destination video colors doesn't change or "match" the source footage after selecting the color area using the color selector tool.

Again I'm new to Boris Red, so on the uphill side of the learning curve. (:

Thanks again!
Byron

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong..

The colors on the video doesn't change to the snapshot colors.

Here's a quick screen capture of what I'm doing. In this video clip I've used Source on the video and Target on the reference. Then tried again with the Source on the reference snapshot and Target on the video.

.

I want the video to have the nice light blue sky that's in the snapshot.

Again thanks for all the help.

You are trying to match the highlight only.
Use the "view " dropdown menu of the filter and check if the sky falls in the "highlight" or 'Midtone" category (Midtone I yhink).
Then go back to normal view and match your color accordingly.

Hope that helps

OK Got it to work..

STEPS:

1. Drop Boris Effect onto clip.
2. Select Color Match filter.
3. Add reference screen shot (or video) and move below source video
4. Adjust size of reference clip
5. Select BCC Color Match track and change Compare Mode drop down to Compare w/ Below.

NOTE: The sky in this clip is between the Highlight and Midtone (leaning more toward the midtone), so match the Highlight Source / Target AND the Midtone Source / Target.

(This was the step I was missing.)

As Alan mentioned, Use the View (Vie... on my screen) dropdown to help determine the whether the area that needs color correcting is in the Highlight, Midtone or Shadow range.

NOTE:
Target = the clip whose color you are sampling
Source = the filtered clip

Additional settings explanations can be found in the online manual:
http://www.borisfx.com/red/Red5Help/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm

6. Now adjust the Master Level and Master Color until the colors line up.

When the colors are in the ballpark normal up Compare Mode to Off.

Comparing the other clips, these steps got the off color clip in the ball park. I guess I could get fancy and use a mask to adjust the sky colors separately from the horizon to get even more accurate color matching but don't know how to do that in Boris RED yet. (:

Quick screen cap video of the steps:

Hope this help others!

Thanks Alan, William Guillaume for all your assisance!

Kind Regards,
Byron
