Boris BBC 7 filters and Vegas 10.0c problems
on Apr 11, 2011 at 3:30:52 am

I am a novice so please be kind. I have Vegas 10.0c (64-bit) running on an HP Z400 with a Xeon W3540, 8GB memory, and an ATI FirePro V7750 (FireGL). OS is Win 7 Pro (64-bit). Boris BBC 7 (7040FX) seemed to install ok but I have problems with some of the filters. For example I was trying to learn the Extruded Text Filter from an online tutorial but I have run into problems. In the tutorial everything works and I see the text in the text editor located in the filter but when I click apply I get an error message from Boris and when I close that window I get an error message from Vegas… nobody likes me. The Boris error message is: Disabling OpenGL; Renderer is in an invalid state. The Vegas message that appears in the Vegas preview monitor window is: CRITICAL ERROR – Unable to active root context. I did download and install the latest graphics card driver but still get the same results. Occasionally the operation will crash Vegas but most times I just get the error messages. I have tried to contact Boris over the last week but no reply yet. Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

[John Reese] ". I did download and install the latest graphics card driver but still get the same results."
Try installing the latest drivers from your card manufacturer NOT from the ATI web site. You want to be using the latest drivers that the card manufacturer has certified as Windows compatible with your card. This is especially true when using OpenGL applications. I've had trouble in the past where installing the latest drivers from the chip manufacturer's site (NVIDIA in my case) has failed to work, while older drivers from the card manufacturer worked fine because those are the drivers that were tested with the card.
[John Reese] " I have tried to contact Boris over the last week but no reply yet. "
Last week was a busy week for most developers getting ready for NAB which is this week. You may get slower response from everyone this week because of this.

John, thanks for the fast response. I purchase the HP workstation assembled so I just opened it up and there are several stickers on the graphics card that all have ATI on them and the fan also has the ATI logo so I think this is an ATI card. I also should mention I have the latest updates to W7 Pro. By the way the tutorial is the one on YouTube for Vegas Pro 10:

Does anyone one if this tutorial works? Again the failure occurs when I click the Apply button.

Yes, but ATI doesn't make cards just like NVIDIA doesn't make cards. Someone else makes the cards to their spec. HP might have even made the card or it could be that PNY made the card. At any rate, get the latest driver from the HP site not the ATI site.

Yes, I can assure you that it works becasue I created it. I used a $99USD NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT card for that tutorial and as you can see, it works fine.

Still no luck. I downloaded the drivers from HP and during the install setup reported: Setup has detected an incomplete build. Setup will now exit. I rolled back the driver and tried again but same error. I also removed the download and tried downloading again but same error. I was going to try and remove the ATI Catalyst Install Manager and Control Console but was denied. Checking the Internet looks like a pain and regedit operations to get it taken off. I will try again over the next day or two and I do appreciate your help John. Sorry I missed that you authored the tutorial it is very nice just hope I can get it to work!

I would contact HP and ask them for help if it's a new PC. It sounds like there may be some display driver issues since it's unable to update with the drivers from HP's site. This may be the cause of the issue. Good luck.

Hi John, Well two days with HP and no luck. We tried all kinds of things and I made sure I had the latest framework 4 .net. Four different drivers with the same error so I went back to the ATI driver which installs fine but have the Vegas and Boris error. The V7750 was about a $700.00 MSRP card so this time I would like to go with a replacement and something less expensive. I would like to keep using dual monitors at 1920 x 1200, again I have Win 7 sp-1, 64-bit. Could you or anyone else on the forum recommend a card that would meet these requirements and that you know works with Vegas 10.0c and Boris BBC 7. Thanks for any help...

I hate to say this... but your experience is *exactly* why I would never buy an ATI card again. Their drivers are a horror and never uninstall cleanly. I had nothing but trouble with them years ago. My laptop unfortunately came with an ATI chip and I have problems with those drivers as well. Never again.

I would recommend an NVIDIA Quadro 4000. It's in the same price range and it's a solid performing graphics card that supports CUDA in case you want to use After Effects or other applications that are CUDA enabled. If you really want a cheap card that works, my NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT was $99 and as you can see from all of my Boris TV tutorials, it performs great with Vegas Pro 10c and BCC7.

Thanks for the suggestion John. I checked on the 9800GT and it is hard to fine most are the 9800GT EE. I did some more looking and checked reviews and decided to try the EVGA Geforce GTX460 1 GB. It looks like it supports the CUDA. Should be here Tuesday so I will let you know how it turns out. If you hear a scream it means I am still having problems. Thanks again for your help.

John I got the EVGA GTX460 1GB card yesterday but had to wait until today to install it. I need two, 4-pin molex cable extensions for one of the 6-pin power connectors on the card. I installed the latest drivers from EVGA (270.61) and then tried your extruded text tutorial again. This time everything worked and rendering and response of the filter seems to have no noticeable delay. I think the filter/card combo is working very fast. Now I just hope the graphics card holds up for awhile. I can now start looking at more of your tutorials. Thanks again for your help.

I'm glad that's working for you and thanks for reporting back so that others in the community will know what graphics cards work and which don't. Enjoy.
