Jagged images in InDesign and PDF

OK, so here's the sample:

I do a screenshot of my screen at high resolution, crop it in Photoshop, paste it to InDesign and scale it down. That's when I get jagged edges that can also be seen in exported PDF but not in Photoshop original.

Why does InDesign reduce quality on scaled down images? Doesn't it know how to handle them properly?

I've never pasted anything into InDesign, so that could be the problem, as the image goes through the system clipboard. Just do it the usual way: save image from Photoshop into a file (psd format is fine) and import the image file into InDesign and see if that comes out how it should.
There are different PDF export settings as well, but let's take this variable out of the equation first.
