A Day Made of GlassA Day Made of Glass

Corning's "A Day Made of Glass" is a worldwide viral sensation with over 12 million views on YouTube. The video shows technologies evolving with Corning's specialized glass products in everyday life in the near future.

"Glass" has been featured on hundreds of blogs, tech sites and investment pages including Wired, Current, Gizmodo, Open Salon and Atlantic Wire, reaching Number One Video on Unruly Media's Viral Video Chart. Marketing Daily called it "The most-watched corporate video of all time."

Rough House (San Francisco) was the production company, partnering with Westernized Productions for VFX. Dave Mackie directed the project for ad agency Doremus. Rough House Executive Producer Todd Lindo led the production & post teams, including: Marcello Grande (Westernized Productions) - VFX Supervisor, Lisa Tesone - Live Action Producer, Norman Bonney - Director of Photography, Sterling Storm - Production Designer, and Marc Cebrian (Rough House) - Editor. For Doremus, San Francisco: Michael Litchfield - VP/Creative Director, Interactive Media and Catherine Hunter - Agency Producer.

Six days of production for A Day Made of Glass took the cast and crew of 45 to locations in Marin County, San Jose, and San Francisco. Post production was completed at the 550 Bryant Street studio with artists from Rough House and Westernized using After Effects, Nuke, Maya, Final Cut, and numerous 3D tracking tools. E.P. Todd Lindo noted, "The live action production was definitely a challenge, but creating all the elements of technology that don't quite exist yet, that was the real fun. Fortunately, we have a lot of artist firepower here at 550."

In a couple of words: simply elegant! All involved are to be congratulated on an excellent execution of an extremely solid concept.

One little but, though. This is remarkably similar to a piece done by Sun around ten years ago which showed giant, curved work surfaces on which windows could be moved, sized and changed to other functions. The Sun desk also had a shot where the actor just laid a printed page face down and that part of the desk became a scanner with the scan then instantly dragged over and integrated into the actor's project. And, as a final difference, the Sun piece ended with the message that virtually all of the technology shown by this peak into the future was "operating in development labs today." That was ten years ago and so far the closest, coolest thing we have to it is the iPad.

None of this takes anything away from A Day Made of Glass. It is truly at the pinnacle of corporate video.
