Converting compsite to component to connect to capture device

Here's my problem:

I have a Canon XL-1 with a dead fire wire port. The repair shop I called said that Canon no longer makes this replacement part, but they still might be able to repair it. If it can't be repaired I want to present my bosses with another option.

The Black Magic Pro Intensity extreme seems like a good option (I need the thunderbolt connectivity). But the Xl-1 only has S video and composite connections on the back. So here's my question: Do I need to buy a converter box to capture from the XL to the intensity, or can I use my dvd/vcr combo as a converter. Connect the camera to the vcr/dvd, and the dvd/vcr to the intensity to via hdmi or competent.

Will that work? or is there another option?

Composite is a horrible way to capture video. It is the lowest common denominator. Converting it to Component will help you connect but will do nothing for your signal quality. I'd push for a new camera...

Ah, Gotcha. Well, one option is to buy a cheap palmcorder for a 100-300 bucks. Has a FW port on it.
Plays DV tapes all day.

OR

A Used DV deck on Ebay, pretty cheap nowadays.

Yeah or any DV camcorder would also play those tapes back and do it in Firewire vs. an analog downconversion. Time to say farewell to the XL...

That will work but understand, once composite, always composite. Doesn't matter how ya slit it up after mixing it up.
