New Source for Music
The New Age of Production Music Libraries
by: Christine DiMiceli
Production music libraries are practically a dime a dozen. A Google search of this generic term yielded about 269,000 results in .63 seconds. All the major players have done their search engine optimization homework and are all present and accounted for. So how do a couple of entrepreneurial composers set themselves apart from the pack when launching an on-line library? Al Jewer and Andy Mitran may have done just that with the recent launch of PerfectChoiceMusic.com. This is definitely not your father's music library.
Using only a core group of composers to provide the original music, Al and Andy mix and master every song for sonic quality then cut each piece into multiple alternate mixes, bumpers and stingers of varying lengths and give the user an option to purchase it as a Production Package. This is a new breed of animal. Not satisfied with just one or two cut lengths of thirty or sixty seconds. Oh no, some of these Production Packages have thirty or forty cuts!
Gone are the days of a film producer having to fill the role of music editor, roughly cutting music tracks to fit a sequence. Gone are the days of searching through genre-specific CD's for music that may or may not be found in multitudes of other music libraries. The work has been done and delivered in a way that is both time and cost effective for the editor via instant download.
Being small and new has some drawbacks, of course. The site itself doesn't have the glamor and glitz of others, a search for specific music doesn't yield hundreds of results and they're certainly sparse in a couple of genres (comedy seems lacking). However, the ability to preview up to forty different alternate mixes and cuts of a single song and purchase it all in one instant download is certainly a plus.
Perfect Choice Music's owners and principal composers Al Jewer and Andy Mitran are not exactly new to the game of production music. For five years, they've been music contributors to the Oprah and Dr. Oz shows. And if the name Andy Mitran sounds familiar, you might recognize him as Professor Andy from WGN's long-running but now off-air Bozo show. “We've been lucky enough to contribute music to some of the most respected and longest running shows out there. With the launch of PerfectChoiceMusic.com, and the development of the 'Production Package' we're hoping to be heard on hundreds more.” said Professor Andy via phone recently.
The big boy music libraries may not be shaking in their boots quite yet. However, the independent libraries are on the rise with quality and innovation so this may be the time to check out what the “little guys” are doing and think about what the industry will consider standard from here on out.
