Hello
I have some training videos to do in the near future and was wondering if anyone could point me to any information regarding the use of classic movie clips within my training video. Like old westerns etc.
I understand that there are very tight rules regarding the broadcast and distribution of copyrighted material but it

See the thread on using clips for a business meeting opener in the Business and Marketing forum.

Spend your money wisely by not using the clips.

The commander says "Use this music for my promo video"
I says "It's copyrighted"
She says "I'll handle it - Only a select few will see it"
"OK", says I, and I go do what I'm told, with much reservation.

It's now on the intraweb, shown to VIP's at briefings....

Be careful and good luck.

"Danger, Will Robinson!!!"

Stock footage places like IPA can get you some remarkable stuff, all pre-cleared. Or you can sometimes fake up things with local community actors and get it done cheaply and without the legal hassles.

Anybody that just takes the commander's word it's cleared, without anything on paper, is going to be the fall guy when it goes bad.

I personally use Getty Images 'cause they have the best footage and the best web based search systems. Besides they own everyone else!
when you talk to the stock house(s), just tell them how the video will be used, how often and how it will NOT be used. They have different usage rates for broadcast,non-broadcast and one time exhibitions. And you may get a little price break depending on how many clips you purchase. And don't be surprised if they ask for a copy of the finished video as well! Just be up front with them.
