James HoughtalingCannot view COW videos with Firefox
by on Feb 26, 2012 at 7:41:26 am

Is there a known issue with playing videos the live on the COW servers? All I see is a still image of the video but no player. I can view the vids fine via Chrome, but not in Firefox.

Hello James,

There are no known issues of this kind.

What version of FF are you using?
Can you post a URL that you are experiencing this issue on?

Abraham

I'm using FF V 10.0.2
The problem occurs on all of the videos that are hosted on this site.
I just get a still image where the player should be.

The problem appears to be with Adblock Plus. When I disable that add-on the video player appears.

Hmm, not sure how to check on javascript...though I do have a Java Platform SE 6 U29 6.0.290.11 plugin running.
The link you provided gives me a 404 error.
No, I am not behind a firewall.

When you view this page in your browser do the ads display?
http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/1/858948
If they do, you have Javascript enabled.

No ads on my browser - that would be thanks to Adblock Plus. As I mentioned in an earlier reply, if I turn Adblock off, the player appears. I've had this happen on other sites like local news websites where their videos look like ads to adblock and won't display. I just never made the connection.

Sorry, I had missed that you mentioned Adblock Plus. That must be it then. Sorry we don't have a work around for that right now.

[Abraham Chaffin] "Sorry we don't have a work around for that right now."

And never will. Please do not work on one, Abraham. In fact, we should make it to where AdBlocker users find NONE of our pages or videos showing up, just an image of an old TV with no picture, just noise, and a thank you for NOT supporting Creative COW.

;o)

If we support ad-less viewing, we can turn off the COW and all get back to our analog lives -- at least the parts that we spend in the COW.

There are premium sites on the net that charge you and do not have ads. We aren't one of them. There are no free lunches, if you don't pay then we have to -- and we pass that cost to our sponsors who underwrite the cost of supporting all of the 2 million users a month that visit all of our FREE content.

Thank you all for your understanding.

Sorry Ron, didn't mean to offend you. I paid for Boris software and on their website they sent me to your forum because for some reason they don't have their own. I also paid for a subscription to your print magazine because I believe in supporting folk's hard work even though I could read it online. I also fast forward through commercials when I DVR TV shows.

;o)

I hope you won't block me.

You didn't offend me, James. I am just very direct and want people to understand that this is a business and if they are not paying for it, someone else is.

You aren't the first person to run AdBlocker software but as time goes on, it becomes clearer to us that many sites that tried to do what we do are now premium sites that charge -- we still don't. We can do that because of the ads. They are not a nuisance, they are the reason that everyone gets this free.

That's all I am trying to say, James. It was not personal and I didn't mean what I said to be personal. It is merely that this costs a lot of money to run each month. Our authors and writers are paid, our staff is paid, our bandwidth suppliers and hardware suppliers get paid. It all has to come from somewhere.

That reality is unavoidable and we need to make that clear as we work on our redesign.

Thanks James and my apologies if my comments came across as a personal attack, they were merely a knee-jerk reaction to the thought of everyone using blockers. ;o)

I will second Ron on condemning AdBlocker and all the ad-blockers. If you ask a third party to run your computer`s business as far as the display is concerned, who knows how many advertisers innocent of abuse, advertisers who abuse, and trojans rolling by in your computer there will be, going by without the least attention or responsibility from you. From adblockers to liberty, that's a stretch. Do you have any evidence to support your fears?

For me, it is not a matter of fear. It is a matter of respect.

People who do not understand that this site survives and continues to offer free services because of the banners here, likely do not give much thought to the work that goes into this site.

So from my point of view, I understand the people who use blockers that log-in from nations around the world with smaller bandwidth connections. What I've never understood are the people who log-in with high bandwidth pipes and block the ads. To me, that is the same as saying that the COW should just close its doors and go away.

Your opinion may differ and that is fine, I am only offering mine.

I understand your concerns Ron and didn't mean to open up any old wounds. I was addressing Fred's implication that the use of adblockers somehow opens the user up to trojans and other bad stuff let alone the loss of liberty. :)

James, when you use an ad- blocker, all that "bandwidth" or "total data" still pours down the internet and modem into your computer, it`s that it gets blocked before it takes up display and sound. Most examples of it are temporarily stored on your memory sticks only, a reason for client- style computers to not fiddle around with 64 MB of memory anymore. Other examples though can be recorded to your hard drive or similar and may take up others ideas of business, not necessarily yours, and await a deleting click from you that doesn`t happen. Manually choosing for and against what comes to your door is a win, win, situation.
