Are you converting it through FCP to re-export it?

You should use compressor to make it a 29.97 uncompressed file for editing in FCP (or MPEG streamclip- a great free open source utility)

What's a 'slower' machine? h.264 of that flavor should work fine on macs made for the last 4 years, easily.

This will sound like a strange question: where are you playing it back that shows choppiness? Safari? QuickTime 7? QuickTime X?
