When LiveType began, it was called India Titler Pro (Prismo developed it). It was mainly to introduce LiveFonts which are animated glyphs played with Quicktime. It almost felt like system fonts were an afterthought. Even so, it's a great titler for SD and even most HD, especially since it is easy to use and fast. It's really great for lower thirds and has some nice textures with it. It also animates movement as well as the glyphs much faster than you trying to do the same thing in FCP using keyframes, and even comes with a library of effects.

Having said all that, anytime I know I am going to DigiBeta (primarily for theatrical release), I do my titling in Motion. Plus I have tighter control over movement and tracking, even in the Z axis.
