mesh "apparent fold" problem

I am modelling an eye in Maya 2009. I have smoothed the brow and upper eyelid - but in the viewport and render it looks as though there are creases and folds in the geometry.

But there aren't any folds...
Is this a UV issue? I have tried relaxing the UVs, and even deleting them - but this has no effect on the "creases".
I have tried different lighting, but this is not the problem.

Does anyone know what is happening here? And how to fix it?

Any help greatly appreciated...

I have just found the solution to this problem - so in case anyone needs it: select the mesh, and unlock its normals. That's it...
I hope someone may find this useful.
