I don't think that will work.
If the footage has not been transferred with pillarboxing (black bars left and right), then it has been cropped to 16x9 (1.178:1). If you crop the sides now as well, you end up with a zoomed-in version of the original 1.66:1 Aspect Ratio.

If you want to know where 1.66:1 lives, go to Belle-Buit.com and download their HD test chart. It has marker lines for 1.66-within-HD.
