I don't think you can maintain the variable frame rate information if you convert, but honestly I have never tried it.

One thing you could do, and this may sound weird, but you could capture at 720p. Run the Frame Rate Converter, then lay the converted shots back to tape at 720p. Then use the deck to convert the shots to 1080 and recapture into the system.

Yep, it's a roundabout way to do this, but actually I did this recently when we had an old project that was 720p and I had created a whole set of graphics in 720p. I laid everything out to tape, and then used the Kona 3 to convert everything to 1080i. It worked really well and I'm sure the deck will convert it just as cleanly.
