You could, and can, certainly turn GPU acceleration of effects and today I'm pretty sure that some codecs are GPU accelerated in decode-and-playback, but back then it was all CPU for decode. Joe is right, back then it seemed pretty fast but today it may be showing its age. It doesn't yet look optimized for the new Mac Pro according to Puget Systems comparative tests.
