BRU, LTO-7, and HighPoint exceed 320MB/sec to tape!

Hi Folks,

We've finally broken the LTO-7 speed barrier!

The industrious team at HighPoint Technologies have updated the firmware in their RocketStor 6328 Thunderbolt to SAS and RocketRAID 4522 PCIe to SAS solutions and the combination of the new HighPoint firmware, BRU, and our ArGest LTO-7 has resulted in our busting through the 300MB/sec barrier by achieving sustained throughput to tape of 325MB/sec and better.

Testing involved the currently shipping HPE LTO-7 drives (used in our ArGest tape solutions) in 6Gb SAS form, the HighPoint RR4522 and RS6328 SAS HBAs, and BRU (the engine behind BRU Producer's Edition and BRU Server). The systems were a new Mac Pro 6 core, an i5 Mac Mini, and a Mac Pro 4,1. The source storage were our ArGest RackMOD units connected via the same HighPoint SAS controller, formatted with RAID 5/0 totaling 58TB and 2.4GB/sec. Media used was 500GB of a mix of 2K DPX, 4K R3D, 1080P MXF, and 1080P ProRes clips, and a mix of MP3, AIFF, FLAC, and BWAV audio files.

In over 45 tests with 6 different standalone and automation drives, the BRU engine in both BRU Server and BRU PE was able to sustain between 325MB/sec and 338MB/sec. This translates to a sustainable 1.188TB/hour using a single LTO-7 tape drive. This puts filling at 6TB LTO-7 tape at 5hr 40min compared to LTO-6 at 4hr 10 minutes to fill 2.5TB.

Testing with LTFS was inconclusive as there are still issues in the currently available LTFS 3.0.0 code (the 2.3 LTFS code doesn't support LTO-7) that causes too many crashes on the Mac OS X platform when testing with large data sets. Smaller sets were clocked at around 245MB/sec - still better than LTFS on LTO-6, but the lack of stability with the 3.00makes us recommend that you wait for LTO-7 if you're depending on LTFS for your data format.
