Hello Bob,
I use Canon 60D plus Sigma 2.8 70-200 for most of my filming (very good setup I might add). I also have a colleague that uses D7000. I am not sure about Vegas, but I am hearing that Adobe Premiere handles the h.264 without transcoding. Shane Hurlbut editor said the following.

"As of right now my favorite and most used NLE is definitely Adobe Premiere CS5…and if you shoot on DSLRs or deal with h.264 footage, it should be yours too. The simple fact of cutting without transcoding h.264 footage in Premiere by itself is miraculous.

I do like Sony Vegas Pro 10 though. It is the professional big brother of the software that you are going to use.
