mpeg2. i think what's going on is a discrepancy between apple/quicktime reading of the mpegs size and the way adobe and media encoder are creating it/reading it. i found an cow afx thread on this where the conclusion seemed to be:

"If your footage is 16:9 then you should encode it as a 16:9 MPEG-2. In QuickTime player this 16:9 MPEG-2 will have an odd frame size (720x404) but that is normal and correct. "

as a test i did the same routine with apple compressor and the resulting mpeg widescreen file reads as 720x404 in quicktime pro but interprets as 720x480 (1.2) in premier and burns correctly to a 16x9 NTSC widescreen DVD in encore. go figure.
