You actually have to go back to prior to the April 2018 version 12.1 for the legacy QuickTime support. If that is the issue.

There is MediaReactor Lite that you can try out to see if it helps. If it does, then it's $99 to buy.

That's just another option.
But I would try what Greg suggests first - transcode the footage to an edit friendly codec. H264 is resource intensive to edit.
