that's a nice project.

well important is of coarse the resolution but also the gap.
if the plasma's are like the orion infinite wall then you don't have gap's but with conventional display you have the housing what you have to calculate is the number of pixels per centimeter or inch.
when scaling is used you have to calculate the signalpixels per centimeter / inch
measure the edge of the display and make these gap's also in your composition's otherwise the leg's of the walking people seems broken ;-). don't forget to look how the scanning is of these display's there often overscanned which you have to take in acount.
some display have a integrated vidiwall mode maybe you can use this feature to minimize the count of players. driving the display's native playback will need a extreme budget.
have a look at adtec they have good quality playback devices inthere edje series. they can be synchronised over network. but remember this is lipsync not genlocked. other option is dataton watchout.
