Can you read the metadata used by the "Edit Original" command?

I've encountered a problem where I'm pressing command+e to open the project associated with a render out of after effects, and it just keeps opening in quicktime. I assume that means that the drive the original project was on is not connected, and I have no idea where to look for it. If I could read the metadata that After Effects uses to open the original project that a movie was rendered from, though, I might be able to at least get a file path to give me a clue where to start looking, or at least that's my thinking. Anyone know if theres a way to do that?
