Create a foggy/dusty/thick atmosphere

Howdy, I'm new to AE CS6, but I've been playing with it for a few weeks. I've got Trapcode Particular plugin, and Video Copilot stuff, but I've been trying to find a tutorial on how to make a thick atmosphere in my scene. Think Das Boot or Se7en where the filled the rooms with smoke before shooting. I'd even like to have particulates moving in the air, like dust.

I haven't found the tutorial I'm looking for, and all the Particular tutorials on Red Giant are 4 years old. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. If you need further info, let me know.

Thanks in advance
