I agree with Noah regarding the flexibility that 720p affords. However, he is mistaken in regard to the native resolution of the HVX. No matter which recording format is chosen, the images generated by the chips ALL start out at 1920 x 1080, progressive; the camera is incapable of doing anything else. The *recording* resolution for 1080 is 1280 x 1080; for 720 it is 960 x 720. Images are downrezzed for resolutions below 1080; they are NEVER uprezzed. It has been said that recording in 1080, then downrezzing to 720 in postproduction, can result in slightly better resolution (compared to recording in 720) due to the increased horizontal resolution in the 1080 format.

The idea that the HVX is 720 native is an unfortunate misconception that is widely circulated, and seems nearly impossible to eradicate.
