(R17) Working in partial symmetry?:

Imagine you have a piece of 3d clip art that's been 'frozen', like a character mesh, that's mostly symmetrical, and you want to edit the face in a symmetrical manner, but without using the Symmetry Object (since sections of the mesh are NOT symmetrical).

How would one go about that? Like if you wanted to make, eg, the ears larger?

(I'm used to a modeler that has a "Symmetry Mode" wherein points that are mirrored across the axis are automatically transformed, while points that have no mirror are ignored. I haven't seen a corresponding ability in c4d/r17's toolset.)
