As far as I know, it is not a good idea to shoot directly into the sun. That said, I have never been too concerned about shooting sunrises and sunsets, particularly with a good amount of ND filters in front of my lens. Generally speaking, with an ND6 or ND9 filter in front of your lens during a sunset, you are not dealing with that bright of a light. I am in no way an expert on this subject, but I have never had a problem. I would never lock off a shot on a midday sun as then you are just asking for trouble. But as far as sunrises, sunsets, and quick pans or moves across midday suns, I've never been too concerned...Just my (rather ill-educated) opinion though.
