Hi Nigel,

Don't be too surprised if / when Cubix releases an Xpander Thunderbolt product to compete with other solutions currently geared towards specialty I/O capture and storage later this year.

Also, I think people interested in Thunderbolt need to dial their expectations down a little bit. While T-bolt is certainly an excellent technology for boosting I/O performance on MacBooks and iMacs, Apple has not yet indicated any willingness to open its iMac and MacBook BIOS to external graphics devices. Until this happens, external graphics running on a Thunderbolt device (in general production release format) are a non-starter.

The other, more technical, hurdle which has to be solved is a work around for hot-plugging discrete graphics cards into a live PCIe bus. Can you imagine the post sales support nightmare for vendors with all of the customers who will ignore correct procedure when connecting these devices? We did, and its another reason why the discrete external graphics support won't happen anytime soon.

Once you get past these two hurdles, and you can settle for PCIe x4 bus performance, you can begin to enjoy external graphics performance on your mobile Apple product via Thunderbolt.

BTW - we had a couple of Autodesk guys(among many other vendors) stop by the Cubix NAB booth last week when they heard we were running a DaVinci Resolve demo on Mac Pro...hardware acceleration courtesy of 2x NVIDIA Quadro 6000 cards connected via Xpander. Don't know if it will mean anything for Smoke 2013 or not, but they were interested nonetheless.
