what are YOU doing with your G5 computers

I've got a pile of dual processor G5 computers that are gathering dust because they don't run FCP any more (though the iPhone 5 probably will).

Trying to think of something useful to do with them.

What are YOU doing with yours?

Sell them on eBay for $500 a pop before Apple comes out with an updated model.

Use them as a SAN controller. ;)

[Jeremy Garchow] "Use them as a SAN controller. ;)"

Don't even joke about that! Using a G5 as a metadata controller is akin to hauling nitro glycerin in a horse drawn carriage across a cobblestone street.

They don't? FCP 6 no longer works? On NONE of them?

:)

Office machines? Older software like older photoshop. Give them to schools...They'd LOVE that. My kids have mine, it's their internet/homework machine.

Send them to me...I'll even pay shipping. We're still using g4's for editing (aside from my 1 intel mac) and magazine layout, and g3's for the sales staff. Outdated? yes. Gets the job done....also yes.

Able to find support or use new technology? I wish.

You can run FC 6 in any G5. No FC 7.

I know, I was being sarcastic.

I've a client who... and get this... no, no laughing at the back... is making money with hers. It runs 6.06 without a hitch, has crashed so few times I can't remember the last time I had a problem, and does 95% of the things my 7 system can. So encodes take a little longer, and renders too, but we got around that one by me teaching her how to render, export and encode. Now she does that outside of my billable hours.

So don't write them off just yet!

Actually from what I've read, you can run FCP 7 on G5s, but you need an installer called Pacifier to do it. I've read several blogs about doing this without hiccups. ProRes may lack in performance since it's geared for Intel but from what I've heard it works. If you check the code it's still Universal Binary which means it should still work.

Wow, I didn't think that it was possible for FCP7 on a G5, no way, no how.

I was pondering the exact same question of what to do with my trusty dual 2.7 G5 last night. Do I drop a few hundred in it to keep it usable for another year (add an SSD boot drive, max out the RAM, upgrade all my apps, polish up the aluminum)?

Or... do I ditch it on eBay while it still has some resale value and get that new 17" i7 Macbook Pro that I've been eying? Will I be disappointed?

I still use my old G5 and a couple of Ciprico RAIDS as a kind of off-line storage. I have all of my machines networked through a Gigibit router. I have a PC running ProCoder software and I use the G5 as a Source/Target for the PC. I dump files from the MacPro to the G5 and then use the PC/Procoder to do compression while I continue to work on the MacPro. I usually need to export files in a streaming video format that only Procoder will encode to. I can do all of this off-line and not tie up the other machines. The Gigibit connections really speed things up.

Faster! Better! Cheaper!
Pick any two.
