B-roll footage
B-roll footage

Can someone define a-roll and b-roll footage for me? I'm entirely self-taught in this industry and this is a term I've just encountered. Someone is requesting "some raw footage to use for B-Roll pieces".

I'm humbled.

My assumption is "a" and "b" reference sources. A, being the primary source and B, the secondary. When I do concerts I have my "a" camera set on a tripod focused on the entire stage while the "b" wanders on the stage catching closeups. My editing consists of the mix of the sources/reels.

Am I close?

I've read that B-Roll is the footage that is used to break up the monotony of interviews and voice overs. It contains visuals related to your subject and can be creatively filmed with pans, zooms, fx...
