Compressor / Video Conversion - Need To Convert MKV To DVD
by KB Burnfield on Jun 9, 2019 at 4:20:50 pm

I was recommended to someone who wants a video film burned back to DVD.

He ripped a DVD of an event video to his computer in MKV format and since then has lost the actual DVD.

He's paying me to reconvert it back... but I can't get the quality worth a damn.

The MVX is 1080p and is very high quality but I just don't know what's the best way to convert it.

I've tried a bunch of different conversion tools including Compressor and using Toast Titanium to burn the DVD but every time the quality is bad.

Would really appreciate some guidance and suggestions!

Thx

So you’re going from 1080p to 480p and are expecting it to look great? Where did the 1080p come from.

We can want... can't we? 😏

It was video shot in HD from a DSLR. It was put over onto a DVD so it could be played by the shooter and the guy ripped the video to his computer so he could play it on his laptop and send it but for some reason he did it in MKV format. I've asked if we could find the original video but he can't seem to find the videographer.

The original MKV is very sharp even on a big display but I'm just trying to get a decent conversion to MPEG-2 to get an equal quality DVD out of it.

So he's gone from the HD to SD then back to HD in his MKV and now wants to go back to SD. I suspect it's going to be difficult. I remember researching it a couple of years ago and even Matroska themselves saying that it was very difficult to go from an MKV container to DVD without losing an unacceptable amount of quality. Can't remember the why though.

You might try EditReady to get from MKV to something like ProRes and then try burning from there.

Alternatively, if the MKV is playing back ok, maybe it's worth trying a direct capture? Play out the MKV into a capture device and see if that works.
