10.3 update - now has export to MXF file option?
by Matt DeGennaro on Nov 27, 2016 at 8:43:04 pm

I'm trying to understand the difference (if any) between an MXF file and a DCP file.

Does the new 10.3 'export to MXF' file mean I can export my film to an MXF file on a hard drive, bring the hard drive to a theater with a digital projector, have them upload it and play it?

am I missing steps?

No. MXF (Material eXchange Format) is a file format wrapper, like MOV (QuickTime) or MP4. A DCP (Digital Cinema Package) is bundle containing files that are formatted for theatrical projection. Two completely different concepts. You have to go through a separate program, like EasyDCP to produce the proper file. Then there's a specific spec for the drive itself on which the DCP files will be delivered.

DCP is comprised, in part, of MXF files, but DCP and MXF can be mutually exclusive.

Adobe Media Encoder can make DCP files for you, or you can purchase plugins that have been mentioned here already.
