4 K video in Vegas, terrible preview
by Jono Grant on Jan 23, 2020 at 3:14:13 am

Hi, trying to work on a 4K video in Vegas 14
The preview barely works at all, even if I set it to "draft/quarter"
Any settings I can tweak to get it so that I can see it in real time? My system is:
Core i9 9900K / z390 Designare / 64GB DDR4 2DIMM / Dual Evo 970 Plus 2TB / 8TB Gold HDD / Quadro P4000 Graphics / 850W PSU / Win10 Pro x64

Vegas is basically setup to default.

Thanks!
jono

Hi

4K video is not just 4K - what is the specs. of your footage ?

Use the Mediainfo app !

Ole

Sorry!
The specs are:
3840x2160x24, 31.579 fps progressive H.264 44.1kHz 32 Bit float Mono AAC

When it asked if I wanted to match the project settings, I said yes.
Thanks
Jono

Here are the Vegas settings:

31,579 fps is very strange - and probably your problem!

So still want to see all the specs of your recordings!

Here are just a few things you can change about your settings!

Full-resolution rendering quality: Best
Deinterlace method: None
Resample mode: Disable resample

Audio - next page
Resample and stretch quality: Best

Here's an example from one of my Panasonic GH5 recordings!

Thanks!
Here's a screen shot of the media info. (The specs I previously posted are just what Vegas displayed when I click on the video file)
This is just a video from an iPhone 8 plus set to 4K 30 fps. Media info shows 30 frames but max fr at 31.579 which is what vegas reported.

Problems are that smartphones use variable fps to adjust exposure and video editors can't work very well with variable fps - so try to convert one of your recordings to constant 29.97 fps with the Handbrake program! And then see if it gets better!

Thanks! I tried that and the video does play in vegas now.
It won't let me keep the dimensions though, it seems to force me top use 1920x1080
wants me to change it to an m4v or mkv as well

Is there a way to retain the size and file type?
Cheers
Jono

Hi

You need to change the settings in Handbrake !

After you import a recording - you have to press High Profile !

Youtube is your best friend for help to best quality out of Handbrake !

Ole

Thank you!
My handbrake doesn't seem to have the "legacy" preset drop down for some reason. So "high profile" doesn't show up for me. I am able to choose other presets that do retain the dimensions. I'm trying one called "production max". I'll see how that goes... pretty slow to re-encode on this setting so far...

I need to learn about this program for sure. I'm more of an audio guy, composer/producer. Just trying to deal with some video files.
Thanks again.
Jono

Åhh, I was using and old ver. 1.1.1 of Handbrake !

Ind the ver. 1.3.1 - you can use:

Production
Production Max or Standard
or
Devices
Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround- and changes the settings

If you often shoot movies with your Iphone - then it will be smart to buy an app for your Iphone: Filmic Pro - where you can set the constant frame rate !
