New Varicam at NAB 2011
by Charles Binn on Sep 28, 2010 at 8:49:23 pm

Just got the information from my dealer that there will be a new Varicam(or varicam like) camcorder at NAB 2011. Full HD up to 30 frames and 720p up to 60 frames (or even more, up to 100 frames).
Does anyone has more information?

Charles

That would be cool, but I thought Panasonic were not happy with the downrez quality of the 1080 chip in the 3700 and never implemented 720 in that camera. But it would good as long as the new camera doesn't have a 3700 price tag. A 2/3" camera doesn't stay on the cutting edge for more than two years anymore, making it very hard to keep up with Jones' (and the bank manager).

Jeff R; you would have some insider clout to find out more? ;)

I'm hearing rumblings of a large sensor P2 Varicam that could appear Q1 2011, prior to NAB. Don't know what kind of lens mount or if AVC-Ultra will be included, but I'm hearing sub-$30K pricing. The AF100 may have a big brother soon!

You're not thinking of the the new 3100 are you Jeff? Not enough of an "upgrade" really.

Peter,

The HPX3100 is price to much like the trade-in deal on an HPX3700, making it seem redundant.

If the rumors I'm hearing about an impending large sensor P2 Varicam are true, and under $30K, this is what I would buy to compliment our HPX2700 and offer a step up from the AF100. A Fujinon/Arri Alura 18-80mm PL-mount cine zoom would be a nice combination. I'm hoping for AVC-Ultra, offering 4:4:4 color space and higher bit rate recording than AVC-Intra 100.

While not as trendy, a 2/3" camera/ENG zoom is still the best tool for docs and any kind of project that requires quick/get it right on the first take. Large sensor cameras and cine lenses aren't conducive to that need.

I hope the rumour of a large sensor Varicam is true. I don't think the 3700 trade-in deal is operating. It's only the 2700.
