sometime next year i am planning on purchasing the DVX100B, and was wondering about how good it would do for documentaries, sports or independant films.
anyone?

Thanks,

Should do well but have you considered moving up to HD? Panasonic is set to release the HMC150 which gives you a similar price point to the DVX100 but gives you 720 and 1080 HD recording as well. Not sure your application but a standard definition only camera as a new purchase in 2009 is becoming less and less a top recommendation.

I have considered hd,but , that means editing software that supports hd! I've looked at the AG-HMC150 and was very impressed!

thanks for the info,
Sam

Depends which platform you're on. On the Mac it means Final Cut Pro which you'd need anyway to take full advantage of the 24p mode of the DVX100.
