Merge clips in timeline horizontally into 1 clip
on Dec 2, 2018 at 7:04:03 pm

Hi, i am using FCP7.
I have a clip that i chopped up on the timeline and reassembled the frames ina different order. Now i want to combine these back into 1 clip. ( I need to make it 1 clip because i want to apply motion keyframes and can only do it if its a single clip.)
But i dont want to merge the clips from different tracks. Just want to merge a section of chopped up clips on a single track into 1 clip.
Please lemme know how i can do this.

You'll have to export from FCP, creating a new clip. Use ProRes 422 for the export.

Yeah...what Dave said. Only I suggest exporting as a Quicktime Movie, using the SOURCE settings...meaning it won't re-compress. It'll just output a new file, no recompression. UNLESS your file is like MP4 or H.264, then it won't. Then exporting PRoRes 422 is a good option.

And if there is overlay on tracks above the clip you wish to export, you can either turn off the tracks above, temporarily move the clip to the top track to render or simply copy it and paste the end of your timeline to do the render.

Bring the QT rendered clip into the timeline and replace the one you have sliced up. No-one has mentioned that you can also turn the sliced up clips into a single compound clip to apply keyframes. FCP7 did not handle compounding that well so most of us avoided it but it is a way to achieve what you want.

Or simply Nest the clips...
