Edit quirk what am I doing wrong?
on Aug 11, 2014 at 9:12:53 pm

HI,

I have FCP 7

Sometimes when I choose a video crossfade with two files butted together, after I click at the joint of the two files and choose a transition, the result is that the grey part showing the effect is only on the edge of one file and not across BOTH files.

Other times, the selection and placement covers both edges and everything works as I expect it to.

Handles. If a transition won't start in the middle, but rather starts at the cut point, that means that the incoming clip, the second clip, starts right away...the IN point is at the head of the clip, the first frame. If you want the dissolve to happen at the middle of an edit point, you need to make the IN point of the second clip a few frame AFTER the start of the clip. for example...15 frames from the start if you want a 30 frame dissolve

Thanks Shane.

Right! But sometimes when I click on the butt edit and a thicker line appears, which I take to mean that's where the transition is going to go, it doesn't crossfade across the end of one clip and the beginning of another, which is what I usually want to do.

How do I make it do that consistently? My clips are usually a minute or so in length.

Thanks for your help.

Rergards,

Ty Ford

FCP will default it to a center dissolve, unless you lack handles to do that. If you manually drag the transition, you should be able to put it where you want, unless you lack the handles at the end or beginning of the clip to do that.

Thanks Shane.

It must be the handles part that's doing me in when it doesn't work. Ah, so I have to actually overlap the cuts some in order to create handles!? And I would still see only one straight line at the butt joint?
