Audio & Video Tracks out of Sync Sony Z5u & Final Cut Pro 7.0.3

I am importing video from a Sony Z5u into FCP 7.0.3. My audio track and video tracks are drifting apart. Does anyone know what the proper import settings are for that combination for Standard Def, 16:9 AVI files? Thank you. Bob

Drifting audio usually points to a hardware issue-not import settings.
Using resources while it's capturing can do it, low hard drive space, low disks or using the OS drive can all cause audio to drift.

However progressive is not 29.97. Should be 30p or 24p.

Just to add to Todds points.

Do the avi files play ok outside of FCP ? If so transcode them to ProRes (422 should be fine), keeping the same size and frame rate and then import those.

Hopefully that will help

HOW are you importing these files?

FCP and AVI don't go together.

Thank you Todd, Neil & Shane, Sorry for the delay. I was on a camera gig today, Sony D55. Just to let you know, I am a cameraman(about 20 years) and do some offline editing about every 3 or 4 months. In the past, I have imported Panny HV200, Z5 or 7u and 5DMk II files into FCP 7.0.3 without problems.
But I am far from a professional editor and don't claim to be. If you have time to give me some pointers, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Bob

Hi Bob

You didn't say if you were trying to import AVI files or if you had transcoded them to ProRes. This is a crucial step when dealing with some formats. FCP does not work well with various codecs including AVI, MP4 and H264.
As an example H264 files from a 5DMKII can be directly imported into FCP seemingly without issue. However you are more likely than not going to get all kind of errors ranging from sync issues to flashes on edits.

So with all those formats (and others) you must transcode your footage to ProRes before you edit with them as sync issues are very typical of the kind of problems you will get with these formats.

Transcode the AVI files to ProRes, you can use Compressor for example to do this. Then see if the sync issues persist. Let us know how you get on.

best wishes

Hi Bob

ProRes LT is totally fine, some people happily use that for DSLR footage. So should be totally fine for your AVI files and does not eat drive space.

best wishes
