editing w/ 720x480 footage in a 16:9 sequence
on Nov 19, 2012 at 7:39:40 am

I know that variations of this question has been asked a million times, but I haven't seen anyone ask specifically about what I want to do.

I want to edit 720x480 footage on a 16:9 canvas (w/o stretching or scaling...keeping the black bars on the side).

I was able to achieve this by choosing 'Custom 853x480' in the sequence settings menu, but the problem is this:

The raw footage constantly needed to be re-rendered, whereas the raw footage did not need to be rendered when the sequence was set (automatically) to the native format (720x480 NTSC).

The reason I need to edit on a 16:9 canvas is because those black/blank vertical areas on the sides will occasionally be used within the sequence (solid color, scaled footage, etc).

The deliverable will be 16:9, with the vertical areas on the sides black/blank throughout the majority, but not all of it.

Just to re-iterate my question: what sequence setting can I use to edit 720x480 footage on a 16:9 canvas without needing to constantly re-render the raw 720x480 footage?

Make sure that in User Preferences > Editing tab you have checked "Always Scale clips to Sequence Size".
Then open a DV Anamorphic sequence and drop the DV 4x3 stuff on it.

This seems to work!

BUT... I did a test cut, and QT export, and a compress to 853x480 (using MPEG Streamclip) The result is the video is stretched up a little bit, and some information is cut off from the top (see the attached image).

Any suggestions for proper exporting w/ this format?

Oops, just realized the image wasn't included in that last thread. Here it is:
