XF100/FCP 7 OR X import from hard drive
on Jun 6, 2012 at 1:14:15 pm

Hello. I think I am losing my sanity trying to tackle this one.

Following many threads about this but none of the solutions help me.

Background:
- I copied the entire folder structured over from XF100 CF card to external hard drive.
- I did not use XFUtility, i dragged and dropped to desktop.
- now i need to import my MXF files to FCP. Either version 7 or X would be fine.
- I need TWO audio channels as I have a lav and a shotgun

that is ALL. Doesn't sound hard..

problem:
no can do.
files and folders are unrecognizable in log and transfer in FCP 7 and import from camera in FCP X.
video converters that have been suggested on forums everywhere (of the kind that all look and function exactly the same way but have different names) do not help me. They merge the two audio channels together. not helpful.

how on EARTH can i get this material, without having used XF utility, into FCP?!? i have deadlines and i am freaking out!

have tried:
- all plug ins available
- many video conversion programs that i am not allowed to name
- re packaging the files and putting back on the CF card to import, but i get the same error message.

The message is something about unsupported media.

please, please please tell me if you know how i can do this! it cant be possible that i am UNABLE to get 2 audio channels into FCP if i didnt use XFUtility in the first instance..... right?!?!?

thank you...

Did you install this plugin?

http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model

And then use LOG AND TRANSFER?

hi and thanks for the response.
it tells me that the plugin is already installed.

i use log and transfer and get the following message:

CANON XF contains unsupported media ar has an invalid directory structure. please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media

my folder structure is:
CANON XF - CONTENTS - CLIPS001 - AA0102 - (5 files: MXF, CIF, SIF, CPF, XML)

Did you copy over the FULL contents of the card into a new folder? Did you then choose THAT folder in the L&T interface? Not go digging into it?

Melinda,
Did you ever solve this problem?
I have the same lost file structure issue and I have an hour of performances that will be lost if I can't put this back together.
Did you find any applications that can put the MXF/Index files back together?

Call me in a bit of stew here.

TeleBob

Hi Bob,

in short, no, i was unable to get FCP to work 100% of the time with the MXF files.
I got the plug in and it worked with many of the files, but not the ones i needed...

So... in answer to the question....
Da Vinci is the only program i found that can give you a 2 audio channel output.
FCP did work when installed and when i used LOG and TRANSFER option as above AND when the file structure was intact, BUT NOT 100% of the time!!!! I dont know what made the difference, as I am sure my folder structure was intact, but some files simply would not open.

My best solution was to use Da Vinci Resolve Lite: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/software/
the download link is at the bottom.

I used Da Vinci to import the material and then export as mov files. It can also do transcoding, but you may need to read the manual a little..
However!!! If your material spans a number of files (they are broken up into approx 5 minute clips) there will be a break in between the cards. Meaning that at the point where the card switches over, Da Vinci is unable to stitch the material back together, and you end up with a gap of about half a second (a jump cut, basically). if poorly timed, you can be very unlucky, as i was.
I noticed that the Canon software does stitch it properly and you dont end up with a gap...

All of this said, I am still very confused. But this was the advice i got from others like Shane, above - who do know these things, and which saved my life!

Good luck!

I ran into a similar problem in that I had some Sony video files I brought back from the field copied on a hard drive.

if you're using a mac, create a disk image of the folder and FCP-7 Log and Transfer will recognize that disk image, when you mount it, as if it was the original SD or CF card.

Hope this helps.
