Select Clip in Timeline in FCP 7 - Keyboard Shortcut
on Mar 26, 2012 at 7:41:24 pm

Hi Everyone!

I am looking for an FCP 7 keyboard shortcut to select a clip in the timeline either ahead of, or behind the playhead. This is part of an attempt to use the mouse as little as possible.

For example:
I would like to use a small section of a large clip in a timeline. I move to my in point, use CTRL V to make a cut. I move to the out point and use CTRL V again to make a second cut. What I would like to do is copy this short clip and paste it in another timeline, but in order to do that, the clip needs to be selected. The playhead is resting at the end of the clip. Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut to select the short clip I just created?

Thanks!

I figured this out.

Instead of using CTRL V to cut a smaller clip out of a larger one, the way to do this is to use "I" and "O" to create in and out points in the sequence you are cutting from. Once your in and out points have been selected, just copy the selected area (CMD C) and paste it (CMD V) into the new timeline.

The only thing to watch out for is that your selected clip will only copy if there is nothing else highlighted in your originating sequence. Anything that's highlighted will take precedence over the clip you selected using in and out points, so just make sure you deselect any clips in the timeline before copying.
