Converted MTS files are Choppy on FCP7

I am working with MTS files. I converted them to HDV and they look fine on Quicktime. But when I pull them into FCP, they look choppy and bad. I am pretty much an amateur when it comes to file formats, so please be kind.

Do your sequence settings match your clips?
From what Hard drive/Raid are you playing back the clips form?
Computer specs?

Chris - Your comment got me thinking about the basics, so I checked the codec on the converted files and found that it wasn't compatible with the project I was working on. I used StreamClip to change the codec and everything is great now.

Thanks for the quick response.
