best way to convert 50p to 25 for DVD
on Oct 17, 2011 at 1:42:19 pm

hi there

i make short corporate films for use on the web, ipad, laptops and DVD's. i am trying to work out a best practice for shooting to best meet all of these in one go....

i'm using a canon 60D which offers 1920 25 int, and 1280 50p. the latter looks lovely in FCP and on all web, puter use, but juddery when converted for DVD use. if i shoot in 1920 25 int, the quality is not as good the other way round.

i'm therefore wondering if there's some dark magic for converting 50p to 25 without all the juddering?

apologies if this is posted in the wrong area, wasn't sure where else to put it as i do all my editing in FCP

is the only answer to do it all twice? once for puters and once for them darned DVD's

thnks in anticipation

cheers

Phil

NB a google search brought up some older threads on this so i'm off to try their suggestions

Interlaced will generally look better on the DVD and Tv's and Progressive will look better on the Computer screen.

With that being said, we usually shoot interlaced if it's going to end up on DVD.

I would shoot 50i.
Edit 50i.
Export finished edit 50i.

Compress that file for the deliverables.
Deinterlace the ones not for DVD/Bluray.

thanks very much, will give it a go.

just one more question... what do you use to deinterlace? i have found quicktime outputs to be a bit hit and miss so far.

thanks once again

Drop the 50p stuff on a25p sequence, open the Speed dialog and let it at 100%, but uncheck "Frame Blending". FCP just will drop 50% of the frames.
You can do the same in Compressor:
- In "Video > Settings.." change "Frame rate: current" by 25 fps.
- Set Frame control ON, and in "Retiming Control > Rate Conversion: FAST (Nearest) and Duration: 100% of the source.
That should make Compressor just dropping frames without further picture processing.
You can do it also with MPGStreamclip.

I don't have a Canon, but I doubt very much that shot INTERLACED.
I may be wrong, but I think makes 1080p30 and 720p50.
Would be the only DSLR making Interlaced.
