FCP 7.0.3 won't open in new MacBook Pro
on Oct 8, 2011 at 2:41:57 am

This is starting at the basics. I just purchased a new 17 inch MacBook Pro and migrated my files from my MacPro. Everything works handily except for FCP 7.0.3. When I try to open it, I get a window asking for a serial number. I have the original discs and packaging and entered the number. Then I'm informed it's not a valid serial number.

When I bought the laptop, I specifically asked if FCP 7 would migrate, and was told it wold with no problems. Not so much. I've seen a number of posts like this on the Apple support forums, but no solutions. Of course, the new computer is running on Lion, which I've avoided until this point.

Any help would be great! Thanks.

This is something about your FC installation/serial number, nothing related with the MBP.
Do you have a full FCS3 version, or the FCS2 Upgrade?
The last one needs the FCS2 serial number too.

It's the upgrade. It is, though, the serial number that's attached to FCP when it's opened on my other computer. When I launch FCP, it displays the serial number from the upgrade. I keep a lot of legacy software around, but not sure I can conjure up my FCP serial number from FCS2. That'd be tough.

Thanks! In the end it took the elimination of the FCP ident file, an uninstall, reinstall from FCS3, the serial number from FCS3, and then a new serial number generated at Apple tech support.

Apple still reluctantly providing support for FCP7 even though the 90 days since the termination of the app have expired.

[Carl Filoreto] "Apple still reluctantly providing support for FCP7 even though the 90 days since the termination of the app have expired."
Probably they have no obligation, but that's not a good policy with clients.
