fcp 4.5

Hello,

Hoping you guys can help me, I’m giving an Mac G5 with FCP 4.5 to my nephew,
a young filmmaker who shoots with a Flipcam.

He wants to learn FCP.

FCP 4.5 won’t import the MP4 files the flip shoots. I have no problem importing with FCP7.

I realize FCP 10 would be the way to go but his parents can’t afford a new Mac and this G5 is in great shape and has Photoshop as well, a great learning opportunity.

Any suggestions or workarounds would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff Cadge

No one FCP version supports MP4.
You may try to open the MP4 with QT.7, the convert to any of the editable codecs.

I just did a test with FCP7 and it imported the MP4 file, once on the sequence it did require an audio render.

Thanks,

Jeff

Try MPEG Streamclip (free).

Audio must be 48Khz/16b PCM so FC don't need to render.

For the Flipcam, and the version of FCP he is running, convert the footage to DVCPRO HD. And yes, use MPEG STREAMCLIP.

If you bring footage into FCP, and you need to render when you put it on the timeline, then it means you are doing something wrong. You should not have to render at all. If you ARE...then you need to convert it to an edit friendly codec.

Actually, u can convert to AIC(*mov), which can be recognized by FCP, still without rendering, just as ProRes to FCP 6 or above.
