Inserting Crummy Internet Stills into HD Footage
on Aug 24, 2011 at 4:11:06 pm

Morning All...

I am working on a project that requires me to use some stills pulled off the internet (images of houses from a real estate site) inserted into a 1920X1080 HD film. I am not even sure where to start on this.

The stills do not need to be full frame. I will be inserting them in as overlays on top of a background plate...maybe they will fill a quarter or third of the screen at any given time. I have a couple of bits of software I thought I could use but the minute I start increasing the size the shots start getting pixelly.

I know Red Giant has some software that up res's footage to HD (and I can turn the stills into SD footage and even add some movement into the shot) but I wanted to see if anybody had any ideas before I shell out the dough for the software (and in the context, has anybody used the Red Giant software?)

Thanks

That's for HD VIDEO. You need plugins for PHOTOSHOP to do the scaling.

OR...

Stop trolling the web for free low res photos, and pay for proper full sized ones.

You did not read the post...I can, in fact, covert the still into SD video and then use Magic Bullet Instant HD for the up res...which is what that software does.

And I am not trolling the web for photos...these are specific shots of specific properties that I have to use and the web shots are the only ones available. Schmuck.

The first software I look to for upscaling small shots is Genuine Fractals. But Photoshop can do wonders these days. No, it is never going to be as good as a 10 MP image... but it may be "good enough".

Thanks for the advice...Genuine Fractals (which is now called Perfect Resize) worked great. The other step I took was to port the stills into Photo to Movie (which is an excellent little program for animating stills). I put just a little camera movement on the stills and output the "animated" stills as an SD QT movie. Because I was now working from a QT vid, I then used the Magic Bullet HD conversion software to up res the video to HD. It worked beautifully. I showed it to the client and he thought I had actually shot the houses in Anaheim and Philly that need to be in the film.

it is a shame this forum is becoming increasingly littered with arrogant (and in this case ignorant) responses. it really puts me off engaging in this site at all.
