Secret to clean graphics?
on May 20, 2011 at 4:20:51 pm

Been on FCP for 4 months now and I am having trouble getting small graphics, (around 17 points for disclaimers), to read cleanly. Sometimes I have to move them slightly up or down to get them to read right. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks, Jack

Hi Jack. Nice to see someone from Houston here on the forms. I usually use Photoshop to size my graphics appropriately within the frame I will be working with in Final Cut. In my experience, small graphics has been a pain. A graphic designer gives you this large image and you only need it 25% percent of the size. It's hard to give you specific advice because I don't know what you are dealing with (if you have vector files, PNG, JPEG. The best quality you will get is receiving the graphic in vector, size it appropriately in Photoshop, and use that in Final Cut.

Can you give some specifics about the type of image and your image sequence?

Jack, It's best to have your graphics resting on an even scan line. Go into your motion and make sure that you X and Y are even numbers. Also avoid DV codecs for better graphics

Hi Jack,
When setting graphics, make sure that the x/y center values are integers.
If you are working interlaced, make sure that the "y" values are always even numbers.

Good advice all, Thank you for the responses. The key seems to lie in doing the graphics in Photoshop as the problematic stuff is in the smaller type that I type in text or Boris... Thanks, Jack
