Playing out to XDCAM...
on Mar 30, 2011 at 2:11:32 pm

Urgent assistance needed!!

We are playing from FCP to the XDCAM PDW HD1500...

I need assistance on a couple of issues....

I have set up my sequence to playout all 8 tracks of audio by changing them on the sequence settings and in the timeline by assigning the audio tracks to the relevant channel, however, when I re-import to see if it worked, they have been mixed to 2 channels. What do I need to do on the XDCAM setup to allow it to read all 8 channels or have I missed something on the FCP setup?

Secondly this has to be standard def and the 3 options for recording formats are: HD422, HD420 HQ and HD420 SP....Which one should I choose?!?

Cheers

Hey Adam
If you want to record SD you should be choosing MPEG IMX 50, not one of those HD presets that you listed. What is your sequence format, is it HD or SD?
Regarding audio on the reimported clip, lets get the export in the right format first! (But for what its worth, make sure you have not enabled Down Mix in the Audio Mixer tool).
Cheers
Andy

The timeline is SD...

So I need to change the frequency of the XDCAM deck to that setting? Is that in the extended settings?

As for audio, where is the downmix in the audiomixer tab?!?!?

Ok...so that did the job HOWEVER....I have 8 tracks of audio and yet the XDCAM is only set to 4 tracks therefore only taking tracks 1 - 4.

Can I change the settings on the deck to take all 8 tracks???

Looking at the specs I think the deck only allows 4 channel audio for IMX .. you'd have to record to an XDCAM HD format for 8 channel I think.

Edit: Took another look. 4 ch applies to IMX with audio at 24 bit ... switch to 16 bit audio, then you can get 8 ch/16 bits/48 kHz. From the deck's tech specs...

Recording/Playback Format:

Video:
MPEG HD422 (50 Mb/s)
MPEG HD:
HQ mode (VBR, maximum bit rate: 35 Mb/s)
SP mode (CBR, 25 Mb/s)
LP mode (VBR, maximum bit rate: 18 Mb/s) (Playback only)
MPEG IMX* (CBR, 50/40/30 Mb/s)
DVCAM* (CBR, 25 Mb/s)

Proxy Video:
MPEG-4

Audio:
MPEG HD422: 8 ch/24 bits/48 kHz
MPEG HD: 4 ch/16 bits/48 kHz
MPEG IMX*: 4 ch/24 bits/48 kHz or 8 ch/16 bits/48 kHz
DVCAM*: 4 ch/16 bits/48 kHz

Proxy Audio:
A-law (8 ch/8 bits/8 kHz)

*Optional PDBK-S1500 hardware key is required for DVCAM and MPEG IMX recording.

In the audio on the Sequence, it is at 16BIT but do I have to change that elsewhere in the deck??

Currently the frequency is set to 720/50p, i cant find where I need to change it to IMX...(if i need to at all)...

Additionally, I changed the sequence so that there are now 4 audio channels and yet its still telling me that it isnt supported and that I need to downmix!?!?!

What I/O card (or box) are you using to play this into the 1500 ... and how is it connected to the deck?
What is the source format / sequence format in FCP ... and what is your Video Playback setting?
And do you have the optional PDBK-S1500 hardware key that's required for DVCAM and MPEG IMX recording on that deck?
If not, what recording format have you chosen? You'll need to have choosen MPEG HD422: for 8 ch/24 bits/48 kHz audio recording.

You note: "Currently the frequency is set to 720/50p, i cant find where I need to change it to IMX...(if i need to at all)..."

Yes, you told us you need to record this as SD ... 720p is HD, not SD. Do you need to record this onto the deck in SD or not?

You note: "Additionally, I changed the sequence so that there are now 4 audio channels and yet its still telling me that it isnt supported and that I need to downmix!?!?!

What is telling you that you need to downmix, an error message on the deck or an error message in FCP? Can you confirm that you really are "Playing out to XDCAM" as this thread is titled? Or are you actually exporting to XDCAM using FAM (File Access Mode) ie using FCP's Export > Sony XDCAM ... option (installed as part of Sony XDCAM Transfer / XDB)? That's an entirely different matter.

Sorry Adam .. its late here and I've got to hit the hay. I'll check back in the morning but hopefully my posts have helped anyway and you'll have long since had the problem licked by then.

Cheers
Andy

What I/O card (or box) are you using to play this into the 1500 ... and how is it connected to the deck? - BLACKMAGIC / SDI

What is the source format / sequence format in FCP ... and what is your Video Playback setting?
- Seq is 720 x 576 CCIR601 / DVPAL (5:4) - AUD Settings: 48khz / 16-BIT / Channel Grouped - Apple Pros Res 422HQ
- Playback is blackmagic pal and blackmagic audio

And do you have the optional PDBK-S1500 hardware key that's required for DVCAM and MPEG IMX recording on that deck? NO

If not, what recording format have you chosen? You'll need to have choosen MPEG HD422: for 8 ch/24 bits/48 kHz audio recording- We actually just changed to that and the 8 channel mixer is displayed

Do you need to record this onto the deck in SD or not? - YES

You note: "Additionally, I changed the sequence so that there are now 4 audio channels and yet its still telling me that it isnt supported and that I need to downmix!?!?!

What is telling you you need to downmix ... the deck or FCP? You are "Playing out to XDCAM" as you thread is titled right? Or are you actually exporting to XDCAM using FAM (File Access Mode) ie using FCP's Export > Sony XDCAM ... option (installed as part of Sony XDCAM Transfer / XDB)?

FCP is telling me when I go to print to video as I dont have the Sony XDCAM transfer software...

Even with the 8ch/24bit now selected on the deck, its still telling me that 'the current audio device does not support the number of outputs' and that I should downmix all outputs in order to hear them during playback.

*UPDATE*

EVEN THOUGH WE DIDNT HEAR THE AUDIO WHEN PLAYING OUT, UPON INGESTING, ALL THE TRACKS CAME IN ON THE SEPARATE LEVELS....SO THATS US ALMOST THERE!
