Which codec to choose for a music video edit with this setup?
on Oct 26, 2010 at 7:11:44 pm

I am using a new camera (for me that is) a Panasonic Hdc Sd700 and have shot a music video with two of these cameras. I am using Clipwrap to encode and the options as far as I can see are:

Apple Intermediate Codec (Aic)

Apple ProRes 422
Apple Prores 422 HQ.

I am going to use some effects so there will be several tracks of video to deal with. I have an external esata drive and another external FW800 drive.

I am working on a laptop (Macbook Pro) with these specs: 4 Gb Ram, 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Is 422 HQ to much to handle for this machine?

I still have much to learn ..... :-)

Go Apple ProRes 422. The HQ version just steps it up from 8 bit to 10 bit. Since your not shooting over 8 bit it would just create a larger file with no gain in quality.

These will work nicely over an esata connection.

[Andy George] "The HQ version just steps it up from 8 bit to 10 bit. "
Andy - you need to stop saying this, it is not correct. ProRes HQ and ProRes are both 10-Bit. HQ should not be used when coming from other video codecs. There are documented issues with encoding and rendering HQ, it is really reserved for animation applications. ProRes for the rest of us, but ProRes IS 10-bit.

Michael,

Thanks for pointing that out. I had some bad information there.
Always learning.

A lot easier to handle ProRes then ProRes HQ. You will need a FW800 drive, if you are using compositing (pulling more than one stream at a time) it would be wise to get one of the RAID0 enclosures.

Thanks again. A RAID 0 enclosure? Does that mean an esata connected box with several drives chained as one drive? Is the point having one drive pr. video stream?

I still have much to learn ..... :-)
