My name is Chris, and I am a second-year film and television student in Australia. I am writing this post as I seek advice on buying a Mac Pro for editing together my projects. I have searched through the forums for information, and while it did answer some of my questions, others still linger, which is why I ask. I apologise in advance if I have posted this in the wrong category.
I'll do my best to keep it short. My main questions are:
1) How reliable are the computers themselves? Would I get a good life (say 3 years) out of a 2007-era Mac Pro bought from somewhere like DV Warehouse?
2) If I do purchase used, are there any tests I can run to determine any faulty parts with the computer?
3) What kind of performance can I expect when editing HDV, AVC-Intra (shot on Panasonic HPX-302 if it helps) and Sony XDCAM EX3-shot footage?
I have considered other options, such as either a MacBook Pro 17 w/ eSATA RAID-0 media drive or an iMac i7, however would prefer the expansion and performance a Mac Pro would offer. Plus being able to use capture cards when I can afford it.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me. I appreciate it.
