Best format for exporting from PCto Final Cut
on Oct 28, 2009 at 12:26:24 am

Hi:
I'm going to be archiving material used on my old edit system (DPS velocity on a PC) which used a proprietary MJPEG codec. I want to get them into a format I can use in Final Cut Pro (currently FCP 6). Any suggestions? THE WMV export from the old system is pretty good at high data rates, but I don't think Final Cut can import WMV. Quicktime is just not good from that system. What would anyone recommend?

Thanks.

If you have Flip4Mac, you can.
But FC can not coope with all the WMV flavors. I think you need WMV9.
I would recommend you PhotoJPEG at 75% of quality.

[Steven Gladstone] "Final Cut can import WMV"

Correct.

I don't know that other system (and I'm sure that MANY others on here don't ether), could you please list the type of formats that you can export so we can say what the best option is.

I can export most everything:

Quicktimes are problematical- large and not really good quality. WMV are much better and smaller. MPEG 2 and MPEG 1 are good. I can export uncompressed AVI, but they always fail 70% of the way. It is an 9 year old system with the last update 4 years ago.

I have uncompressed, Animation, Cinepak and other codecs installed.

I CAN do a tiff or Targa sequence (among many others) but that doesn't help me with audio (I suppose I could do it as two separate files one for the picture sequence and one for the audio.

Thanks

I agree with Rafael. Use PhotoJEPG 75% if you can. It's a 4:2:2 codec and fairly compact.
