Best compression

Hi,

I'm trying to compress an old doco of mine to get it to look the best it can be for online viewing.

This is my best attempt:

H.264, 720x567 (786x576), 3.30Mbit/s, 669mb

I tried different ways of compressing through Compressor. I got a bigger file of 3.3gig but it was worse quality than this one. Edges of subjects in the image seemed to be ghost like. I'd like a file round 2gig but proving allusive. Should I be happy with what I got?

Originally shot on DV (Panasonic Z1 believe it or not). Final edit transfered to DigiBetacam. 10bit uncompressed .mov file taken from that (42gig).

I've used Neat Video to deal with some grain and works really well.

Suggestions/comments please!

Thanks.

That's not bad looking considering it's DV source but file size is directly controlled by bit rate and nothing else. So if 3.30Mbit/s gave you a 669mb file then increasing it to 6.6Mbit/s should double your file size to around 1.3GB. You can do the math to hit the target you want. DV source is 25Mbps. AVC/H.264 should give you the same quality at 1/2 the bit rate so as you approach 12.5Mbps you will be getting all the quality you are going to squeeze out of the footage but for SD video 6Mbps should be fine.

don't forget to compress the audio to AAC as well,
that takes up a lot of space.

Vimeo recommend 320 kbps for stereo
128 is acceptable.
if your source is mono, drop to mono and halve the data rate again.

Thanks Nick. Do I need to compress the audio? I'm trying to get a smaller file. I'd like to leave it as is unless I really need to.

i'd say it'd play back better if you compress the audio.
if this is for a streaming server like Vimeo, they will compress the audio if you don't
there's not much point in leaving the audio uncompressed.

John, just compressed it to 6Mbits/sec and it comes out looking grainy. I'm happy with the look of the 3.30Mbits/secs. Would that be Ok or is it too slow?

I thought the 3.3Mbps look good too. It's all about what looks better to you. If you are happy with it, that's a perfectly acceptable bitrate for SD internet video.
