Where on earth are my video files?
on Jan 13, 2016 at 11:50:10 pm

It used to be that I would connect my Panasonic HDC-SD5 and a folder containing a lot of MTS files would appear on my desktop. Nowadays, no such luck. iPhoto asked if I wanted to import the video files on my camera, and I said yes. They were all apparently imported, but when I open FCP and click IMPORT, all it seems to see is the JPG still photos on my camera. Where have the video files disappeared to, and how do I get them into FCP?

Your help will be enormously appreciated.

Are you talking about FCP 7 or FCP X?

If you are using FCP X, you should not be using iPhoto to import your video. You should plug in your camera and use FCP X to import them. I would also use the Create Archive function to make a Camera Card Archive while you're at it.

I'm guessing the same is true for FCP 7. You never want to use iPhoto to import videos that you want to edit.

Oh, I almost forgot... the answer to the question: "Where on earth are my video files?" ...they are buried deep in your iPhotos library structure. You can open iPhoto and drag them out to your desktop. This will make a copy. Then you can delete them from iPhoto if you'd like.

Many thanks, John. My version of OSX doesn't seem to have iPhoto, but Photos. I have just spent half an hour trying to find the four clips I just imported, and come up empty. I know it's Deep Within the Library Structure. Any tips on how to get there would be hugely appreciated.

It's remarkable to me how Apple prides itself on making intuitive programs. I've never encountered anything more baffling than IPhoto/Photos. :-(

IIRC, you need to (right) click on the Photo App and 'show contents' and dig through there.

[John Mendelssohn] "It's remarkable to me how Apple prides itself on making intuitive programs. I've never encountered anything more baffling than IPhoto/Photos. :-("
Intuition is a funny thing... You are overthinking it! ;-)

Open Photos. Select View | Albums ⌘3 from the menu. Double-click on the Videos album. Find the thumbnails of the videos you imported. Drag and Drop those thumbnails onto the Desktop (or into a folder on your Desktop). It will copy the videos there for you. Then optionally delete the videos from Photos by right-clicking and selecting Delete. You can get to the same place by selecting the Last Import album since that was the last thing you imported.

It really isn't any harder than that. You don't need to know where they are stored internally at all... you just need to use Photos the way in was intended (to view photos and video). Hope that helps.
